A 31-year-old man driving an SUV allegedly assaulted a taxi driver while claiming to be the relative of an MLA. The incident took place at Agata Main Road on Wednesday night when the accused, Mithun Reddy, was returning to his residence in HSR Layout from his workplace in Koramangala, said the police.
At Agata Main Road, he got infuriated with the complainant, Thippeswamy, for reportedly blocking his path and refusing to let him overtake. He told the police that Mithun started abusing and threatening him. When Thippeswamy objected to his rude behaviour, Mithun dragged him out of the car and began kicking and punching him, all the while shouting that he was the brother-in-law of MLA Satish Reddy, said the police.
The accused drove off when other cab drivers came to help Thippeswamy. He was taken to a hospital after which he lodged a complaint with the police.
Reddy has been arrested on the charge of assault and criminal intimidation, and remanded in judicial custody.
MLA refutes claim
Bommanahalli MLA Satish Reddy refuted Mithun’s claims and told the Koramangala police that he did not have any brother-in-law by that name. In his clarification, the MLA said that someone was misusing his name and asked the police to take strict action against the accused.
The police on Thursday arrested Mithun who confessed that he had used the MLA’s name to get away from the angry mob.
