In a bizarre case, a spinster lodged in District Jail, Farukkabad since August last year, became pregnant. Shocked with the development, the local administration as well as jail officials were probing the incident and have registered a case against a `Baba’ as the inmate alleged that she was raped after which she conceived.
A senior jail official said that action will be taken as jail officials despite regular check-ups did not inform about the pregnancy to the authroities even as the woman inmate was eight month pregnant.
As per reports, Sangeeta (name changed) of Haiwatpur Ghadiya hamlet in Farukkabad was arrested after she brutally hacked her brother to death on August 29 last year. The police registered a case the same day and arrested her. She has been lodged in the jail ever since and was not given bail.
Sources said that the news of her pregnancy was exposed when a joint team of District Judge, District Magistrate and SSP made a surprise inspection of the prison. Learning of her pregnancy, the District Judge asked the jail administration to probe as tow how an undertrial became pregnant in jail. Subsequently, the inmate was shifted to a hospital for check-up.
In the meantime, Station House Officer of Kotwali police station Sanjeev Singh Rathore, Mahila police station in-charge Vinita Sarthi and a woman constable visited the hospital on Tuesdayevening and quizzed the inmate. The pregnant prisoner gave a clean chit to jail officials and inmates lodged in the jail.
She revealed that she had gone to Panchal Ghat to take a dip in Ganga river where she fainted. She claimed that a Baba identified as `Girja Shankar’ assured to cure her and took her into thickets where he raped her and later fled. The inmate said that a month later she noticed that she had conceived.
Circle Officer of Farukkaabad City, Sharad Chandra Sharma said that they took the inmate’s disclosure in writing and registered a case of rape against the Baba and trying to track down the accused. He said that the police visited Panchal Ghat but failed to get any clue about the Baba. Investigations are on in this regard.
