Mission Kakatiya has yielded good results by storing abundant water in addition to improving the ground water levels, but it has also led to some adverse impact. Innocent children and youth are becoming victims of the brimming tanks as they were dug too deep under the programme.
The recent incident that took place at Kannaram village under Ahammad Nagar panchayat limits of Kolcharam mandal in Medak district was the latest incident where five persons got drowned. According to sources, this is one of the tanks that was dug under Mission Kakatiya. The five persons, who came to their native village to attend a marriage function on Sunday, did not know that it was dug deep. They had migrated to cities in search of work. Not only at Kannaram, but at many places in all the three districts there were no sign boards issuing ample warning for the passersby that the tank was dug deep under Mission Kakatiya. While the youngsters go into the tank to enjoy a swim in the water and drowning, their elders in a bid to save them get drowned.
During last year 47 persons got drowned in Sangareddy district.
