In picture: former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa.
CCTV cameras installed on the second floor of Apollo Hospitals, Chennai were switched off after former chief minister J Jayalalithaa was admitted to the ICU to ensure that the footage was not "accessible to everyone", the institution said on Thursday.
Apollo Hospitals chairman Prathap C Reddy told a press conference here that all medical records related to Jayalalithaa have been handed over to the Justice A Arumughaswamy Commission probing the former chief minister's hospitalisation and subsequent death.
Reddy reiterated that Jayalalithaa was "given the best possible treatment" and the team of doctors that treated her put "their "very best" to maintain the progress made in her health after initial deterioration. "She had made good progress, but the sudden cardiac arrest took her away from us," Reddy said.
Responding to questions on visitors who met Jayalalithaa during treatment, Reddy said these things were left to people who were attending to the AIADMK leader to decide and doctors on duty would have allowed anyone permitted by the "relatives."
"Unfortunately, they switched off all the CCTVs for all the 75 days. As soon as she got admitted, the access to the ICU was closed. All patients were diverted to another ICU and this ICU was occupied only by her. They switched off the cameras because they did not want everyone to be watching," he said when asked whether the hospital was in possession of CCTV footage.
