Federer blew three match points in the BNP Paribas Open final as he went down to a shock defeat to Juan Martin del Potro.
On the first of them the Swiss legend attempted an audacious drop shot from the back of the court that barely reached the net.
It allowed Del Potro a way back in and Shiras couldn't believe what he'd seen.
He said: "Roger put himself in a winning position but rarely do you see him miss out on those chances.
“Yes, it happened a couple of times last year to get over the line, but you don't expect that from Roger.

It's just a startling shot selection from Roger
"It was one of those extraordinary matches. We're never going to forget that.
"Federer went to the drop shot on two championship points. It's just a startling shot selection from Roger.
"He was in a position to come in and make a good play at the net but it didn't work out. It's always surprising."
Federer started the season by winning 17 matches in a row before going down to Del Potro on number 18.
He will attempt to get back to winning ways at the Miami Open on Saturday.
