BHUBANESWAR: The
Adaptive Traffic Signal Control (ATSC) solution, popularly known as
intelligent traffic system, has been installed at 50 junctions across the city.
This system was first implemented on pilot basis at five intersections on the busy
Sachivalaya Marg of the city in June last year. But now all the 50 intersections are manned by the
ATSC system.
Objective of this project is to provide traffic and transit management services to the traffic police in support of improving congestion and reducing delays in the city. It is carried out by
Bhubaneswar Smart City Limited (BSCL), said official sources.
This traffic system will improve travel time reliability by progressively moving vehicles through intersections. It will reduce congestion by creating smooth flow of vehicles across intersections.
This system will not only collect real time traffic data but also optimize the signal phases in real time to reduce delays. Instead of a fixed waiting time, this traffic system will predict traffic volumes and adjust signal timings to match these volumes, said a senior officer of the Bhubaneswar municipal corporation (BMC).
The entire traffic signal control network is operated on solar energy generated from composite solar panels fitted on the signals. To integrate all the 50 traffic systems, a temporary traffic signal control room has been opened at the BSCL office. Later the ATSC will be operated from a permanent set up, said city mayor A N Jena.
This system uses the latest technology in traffic engineering,
Composite Signal Control Strategy (CoSiCoSt), developed by C-DAC, Pune.
“Besides, there will be 14 pelican signals and five blinkers at different locations to ensure road safety conditions. The pelicans and blinkers are in due process of getting installed and they would be completed very soon,” said an official statement of BMC.
