BHUBANESWAR: The state government on Tuesday created 171 posts of police personnel to man a proposed
traffic police station in
Chandrasekharpur here.
At present, the ever-expanding capital city with over 10 lakh vehicles has only one traffic police station near
AG Square.
According to a tweet by the home department, the new police station will control traffic in Nandankanan, Chandrasekharpur, Infocity, Jatani, Tamando, Khandagiri, Chandaka and Nayapalli.
Commissioner of police
Y B Khurania said the fast-growing Bhubaneswar desperately needed more traffic police stations to effectively control the movement of vehicles.
"We had given a proposal to the government to set up the city's second traffic police station in Chandrasekharpur. This will ease pressure on the existing traffic police station, whose personnel currently do duty across the city, including on the outskirts. Once the second traffic police station comes up, response time to emergency situations will be lesser," Khurania said.
The proposed traffic police station in Chandrasekharpur is likely to ensure better regulation of traffic on the Jayadev Vihar-KIIT route where rule violations are common.
"We do not have adequate manpower in the existing traffic police station. We hope the new police station will benefit the citizens," said a traffic officer.
To address staff shortage, the commissionerate police last year introduced student traffic volunteer scheme where college students were roped in to assist the cops at traffic signal posts in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack.
