Municipal officials say drainage waste gushed pushing him inside

Sanitation worker G. Gangaraju (37) died after entering a manhole at the Vambay Colony on Tuesday.

According to the municipal officials, Gangaraju entered the 15-foot deep manhole while another worker helped him by standing on the ladder.

When Gangaraju was clearing the clogged pipe, which was about 3 feet width, drainage waste gushed pushing him inside. “The sanitation staff were working since morning and the incident occurred in the afternoon,” said a resident.

Nunna CI M.V. Durga Rao said the workers did not follow safety measures like fastening themselves with rope or belt.

Municipal Commissioner J. Nivas, Joint Commissioner of Police T.K. Rana and other officers were monitoring the rescue operation till late in the night.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the AP State Disaster Response and Fire Services Department personnel, the Andhra Pradesh Special Police (APSP) and the police participated in the search.
