The Chhattisgarh government has proposed to serve mid-day meals in state-run schools in 96 drought-affected tehsils during this summer vacation.
A proposal in this regard has been sent to the Centre for its approval, an official said today.
"The annual action plan worth Rs 647 crore 81 lakh 44 thousand for fiscal year 2018-19 was approved in yesterday's meeting of the state-level monitoring cum steering committee for Mid Day Meal (MDM) chaired by Chief Secretary Ajay Singh," the official said.
The action plan also includes a proposal to provide midday meals in 28,990 government schools in the 96 tehsils between April and June 15, he added.
The aim is to ensure the children get a minimum amount of nutritious food and to dissuade rural people from migrating in search of a livelihood, the official said.
Midday meals are served in all 44,832 primary and middle schools in Chhattisgarh, catering to more than 31 lakh students, according to the official.
The 96 tehsils across 21 districts were declared drought-hit following a shortfall in rain in the recent kharif season, he said, adding that revenue taxes in the affected areas have been waived.
