STAUNTON - About 6 inches of snow fell overnight in the Augusta County area with more of the white stuff on the way, according to Accuweather.

A light snow should continue falling throughout the day, adding another 1 to 3 inches on top of what is already on the ground.

"It should be ending by early this evening," said Senior Meteorologist Alan Reptert.

As of 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Hermitage reported 6.8 inches of snow; Churchville 8 inches and 6.5 inches were reported near Waynesboro, he said.

Wednesday's high temperature is expected to peak at 37 degrees, allowing some of the snow to melt, Reptert said. The angle of the sun, which is sitting higher in the sky this time of the year, will also help melting.

"Even though we can't see the sun, we are still seeing the energy coming in," Reptert explained.

The storm system moved in late Tuesday night.
