CBOE's stock tumbles after profit, revenue miss

Shares of CBOE Global Markets Inc. tumbled 5.5% in premarket trade Friday, after the futures and trading exchange holding company reported fourth-quarter profit and revenue that missed expectations. Net income rose to $254.6 million, or $2.26 a share, from $44.7 million, or 55 cents a share, in the same period a year ago. Excluding non-recurring items, such as a one-time $191.5 million benefit from the recent tax legislation, adjusted earnings per share came to 87 cents, below the FactSet consensus of 88 cents. Total net revenue rose to $265.6 million from $143.0 million, but missed the FactSet consensus of $267.0 million. "We delivered on our key strategic initiatives and achieved record trading in our highest-margin proprietary products, including VIX futures and options and SPX options, while continuing to launch new innovative products such as Cboe Bitcoin Futures," said Chief Executive Edward Tilly. Bitcoin futures begain trading in December, while CBOE said 2017 trading volume in futures on the VIX for 23% from 2016. The stock has shed 2.6% over the past three months through Thursday, while the S&P 500 has eased 0.1%.

Dow pares loss to turn up by 100 points as choppy trade resumes on Wall Street

U.S. stocks on Wednesday opened lower but turned higher within minutes, underlining a new regime of up-down-trade likely to be the new normal in the market. Investors remain tentative about the stability of the market after a recent spate of volatility appeared to sap the unabashed zest for purchasing equities that has helped push equity prices to repeated records. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell more than 100 points, but was most recently up 123 points, or 0.4%, at 25,036, while the S&P 500 index advanced 11 points, or 0.4%, at 2,705, while the Nasdaq Composite Index , retreated less than a point, or at 7,116. After a period of calm, volatility has become the new normal on Wall Street, with the Cboe Global Markets Inc. , which reflects options bets 30-days into the future on the S&P 500, off 5.1%, at 28.44. The index tends to fall as stocks rise and had spiked to a high around 50, well above its historical average around 20, as markets plunged on Monday. Tuesday's action was marked by wild pricing swings, with the Dow spanning 1,000 points to end the day up 567 points. Shares of Tronc Inc. soared after reports that it sold The Los Angeles Times to billionaire Patrick Soon-Shiong for around $500 million.

CBOE's stock tumbles after J.P. Morgan downgrade on risks related to short-VIX strategies

Shares of CBOE Global Markets Inc. tumbled 5.5% in premarket trade Wednesday, after the options and futures exchange was downgraded at J.P. Morgan, which cited risks associated with the "massive deterioration of value" in short-VIX strategies. Analyst Kenneth Worthington cut his rating to neutral, after being at overweight the past 14 months. He slashed his stock price target to $110, which is 5.9% below Tuesday's closing price of $116.94, from $131. "While the liquidation and fall of various [exchange-traded notes] represents a risk to VIX Futures volumes, we see this as potentially the tip of the iceberg with a likely reduction in VIX Futures trading activity looking out 1-2 months," Worthington wrote in a note to clients. "We also see some risk to volumes in VIX options." The VIX refers to the CBOE Market Volatility Index . The VelocityShares Daily Inverse VIX Short-Term ETN, which was designed to bet against rising volatility, will be liquidated on Feb. 21 after it lost more than 80% of its value in after-hours trade on Monday. CBOE's stock has plunged 14.4% the past three sessions and the broader-market selloff caused a spike in volatility. The stock has still gained 3.1% over the past three months, while the S&P 500 tacked on 4.0%.
