A Roseland man who authorities have said is wanted in connection with a string of burglaries in Central Virginia was arrested early Wednesday in Nelson County.

The Nelson County Sheriff’s Office apprehended Samuel Isaac Hunter, 38, in the 3000 block of Lowesville Road in the Piney River area, according to a news release. Hunter attempted to conceal his identity by providing false information to law enforcement, and after deputies attempted to arrest him, a foot chase took place, the sheriff’s office said.

Hunter jumped into a river while fleeing from officers and was taken into custody in the area of the Piney River Moose Lodge, the release said. He was transported to Lynchburg General Hospital as a precaution for minor injuries related to exposure to the cold.

Deputies obtained warrants on charges of fleeing from law enforcement and assuming a false ID, the sheriff’s office said. Additional charges are possible pending further investigation.

Hunter was wanted in connection with burglary and larceny incidents in Nelson, Amherst and Bedford counties, according to the sheriff’s office.

The Amherst County Sheriff’s Office has said it arrested Hunter on Feb. 27 without incident. He was released on a secured bond and is charged in thefts of multiple pieces of farm and construction equipment, in addition to various other tools.

He is charged in Amherst County with three felony counts of grand larceny, two felony counts of grand larceny: auto theft, one felony count of possession of a firearm by a nonviolent felon and one misdemeanor count each of possession of marijuana and trespassing, according to online court records.

Hunter is scheduled for a hearing on those charges in Amherst County General District Court on June 21, records show.
