On Monday the Govs baseball team made the short trip to Amherst and the Lancers defeated the local squad 11-3 as the Govs managed seven hits.
Nelson pitcher Joshua Tayman got tagged with the loss while Lancer hurler Tyler Hargis got the win. Both teams are 1-1 on the season.
The game was interrupted for a while in the fourth inning after a pitch hit Nelson batter Logan Campbell, breaking his nose. He was taken to Lynchburg General Hospital by the Amherst Rescue Squad. According to Nelson coach Robbie Hudson, Campbell is recovering.
The Govs baseball team opened the 2018 season with a road win in Charlottesville last week by defeating the Black Knights, 10-2. Nelson bats racked up 13 hits while the Govs legs stole 10 bases while plating runs in every frame but the fifth inning.
Josh Tayman led the team with 3 hits and 2 RBIs. Jacob Saunders also drove in 2 runs with 2 hits. Colt Mauer, DeVante Ellis-Rose and Darrian Butler each collected 2 hits with Jake Ballowe and Jack Rodgers adding a hit a piece. Logan Campbell had a RBI along with Rose, Mauer and Ballowe chipping in 1 each.
On the mound Rose threw five and two-third innings giving up 2 runs with none earned on 2 hits, 4 walks and 8 strikeouts. Tayman closed the game going one and a third innings with three strikeouts.
“I was overall pleased with the flow of the game and how everyone stayed in the moment and in tune with the game,” said Hudson. “Our only blemish was the two back-to-back errors in the fourth that occurred just before the Knights team recorded their first hit of the game that eventually extended the inning in which Charlottesville pushed two runs across to make it 7-2 at the time.
“I was really proud of all of the guys with 8 of the starters recording either a hit or RBI. It’s not often that you can say that about your starting lineup.”
The Lt. Govs fell to the Lancer junior varsity squad, 16-0.
