No action yet on illegal slaughterhouses in Gujarat: Govt

A state-constituted committee has identified 31 illegal slaughterhouses across in the last two years, but no action has been taken against them so far, the government told the Assembly today.

Raising the issue during the Question Hour, Congress' Jawahar Chavda sought the details of the work done by the State Committee during the last two years (ending December 31, 2017).

Referring to a directive issued by the Supreme Court, which led to the formation of the committee, Chavda sought to know the number of illegal slaughterhouses identified by the panel in 2016 and 2017.

In his written reply, informed the the committee has identified 31 illegal abattoirs across the state in the last two years.

Responding to a sub-question about the action taken against these slaughterhouses, Rupani said "zero" in his written reply, indicating that no measure was taken against these outlets.

Raising the same issue, Independent MLA Jignesh Mevani asked the government if the committee had failed to serve its purpose.
