Whether it’s in a bag or a box, on any given day someone drops by Wichita Falls Area Food Bank to donate food.

Everything is weighed, accounted for and receipts are offered. People often share the “why” of their donation.

“I was cleaning out the pantry.”

“We moved Mom to nursing care and thought you could use it.”

“Getting rid of the chest freezer and had a lot more than I needed.”

In the fight against hunger every pound counts. Food drives are the most visible but other sources are important.

Through January 2018, 350,029 pounds were donated by food drives, retail donors (grocery stores, vendors) individuals, an anonymous donor and Feeding America cluster distribution through Tarrant Area Food Bank.

During the same month, WFAFB distributed 304,304 pounds of food to its partner agencies - food pantries and feeding programs in Archer, Baylor, Clay, Foard, Haskell, Jack, Knox, Montague, Throckmorton, Wichita, Wilbarger and Young counties.

“It goes out to our agencies almost as soon as it comes in,” said Rusty Williams, WFAFB operations director.

Third Annual Food Fight - The Junior League of Wichita Falls competed with Junior League chapters in Texas and Oklahoma to see which could collect the most for their local food banks. Drive-thru donors, sponsors and businesses filled collection boxes. 7,199 pounds of food were donated to WFAFB.

That’s enough food for 6,000 meals.

Food for Fines – Wichita Falls Public offered a chance to pay off fines by donating food during February. Enough people participated the total donation was 420 pounds.

Book lovers will soon have a unique and easy way to donate food to WFAFB.

Wichita Adult Literacy Council’s 18th Annual Book Fair will be 5-8 p.m. April 12 and 9 a.m.-8 p.m., April 13-14 at MSU Sikes Lake Center.
