SURAT: Police on Wednesday arrested a 22-year-old Muslim man along with a 22-year-old Hindu married woman from Valsad in Gujarat. They were booked for allegedly stealing cash and jewellery worth Rs 98 lakh from the residence of husband of the woman in Valsad. Earlier, they were nabbed from Mumbai airport by Valsad and airport police on Sunday while they were enroute to Dubai via Kolkata and Nepal.
Police had earlier arrested the woman and Salman Shaikh, 22, in Vapi following a missing complaint lodged by her mother. The woman and Shaikh were booked for theft in a complaint lodged by her husband in Valsad city police station on Tuesday. She connived with Shaikh and allegedly stole the cash and gold jewellery from her residence on Tithal Road of Valsad . Police recovered Rs 91 lakh in cash from a person in Mumbai who was to transfer the money to Shaikh in Dubai, sources in police informed.

“The woman and the man both are currently with Vapi police and they will be arrested in Valsad police station for the offence of theft registered here. Police will question them to get details about the theft,” said N K Kamaliya, police inspector, Valsad.

The husband, 23 alleged in his complaint that his wife, who knew Shaikh since her college days in Mumbai, had continued friendship with him even after marriage and planned the theft with him. The woman’s parents live in Vapi town of Valsad. The parents got her married to the man from their community in Valsad in November 2017.

On Sunday, the husband’s family had gone out when the woman asked permission to go and meet her ailing father in a hospital at Vapi. The husband allowed her to go. During the day when husband contacted the wife she could not give her exact location. Due to doubt the husband went to check personally to Vapi when he realized that she was giving wrong information about her location and she was later not answering mobile phone as well.

Since the woman was untraceable her mother also approached police in Vapi and lodged complaint. Meanwhile police got some specific leads and she was traced at the Mumbai airport from where she was planning to go to Kolkata with Shaikh and from there they were preparing to go to Dubai via Kathmandu, police investigation revealed.

They were brought back to Vapi and the woman went along with her parents while police are questioning Shaikh about his involvement in the theft.

The woman came in touch with Shaikh while studying in a college at Mumbai couple of years ago. The woman’s father is in property business while her husband’s family is into transport business. After marriage the couple went to foreign countries for honeymoon.
