Sensex, Nifty pare early gains, telecom, bank stocks rise

The benchmark BSE Sensex pared its early gains to trade below 33,100 levels in late afternoon trade., ahead of the Federal Reserve’s policy meet due 11.30 pm IST.

At 2.45 pm, the BSE Sensex was trading 96.69 points or 0.29% higher at 33,093.45, while the NSE Nifty was trading higher by 23.25 points or 0.23% at 10,147.60.

The gauge had gained 73.64 points in a volatile session on Tuesday.

Sectorally, gains were led by telecom, realty and finance, with BSE Telecom trading 1.94% higher at 2.55 pm. On the other hand, metal and healthcare stocks were trading in the negative terrain, with BSE Metal losing up to 0.50%.

Gains on the Sensex were led by Bharti Airtel, NTPC, L&T, HDFC, Axis Bank and IndusInd Bank, with gains of up to 3.59%.

Traders said buying activity picked up on positive cues from other Asian bourses as investors look towards the conclusion of US Federal Reserve policy meet due tonight.

On a net basis, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) bought shares worth Rs 344.16 crore, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) made purchases worth Rs 731.17 crore on Tuesday, provisional data showed.

The US Dow Jones Industrial Average ended 0.47% higher inTuesday’s trade.
