BANGKOK—Thailand’s ruling junta fired a key election official for criticizing delays in a long-promised vote, deepening uncertainty about the transition to a more democratic government.

The dismissal of Somchai Srisutthiyakorn, a career bureaucrat who had been an irritant to successive governments over the years, follows a series of false starts in returning the important U.S. ally to civilian rule after a military coup in 2014.
