Wendy Thomas, a teacher at Midland Juvenile Day Treatment School, has been honored with the Excellence in Education Award from the Michigan Lottery, according to a press release.

Thomas specializes in teaching math and history to students in grades 7 through 12. Midland Juvenile Day is a school for students that attend under court order when misbehavior gets them expelled from another school.

“I can’t think of a more rewarding job than in the field of education, especially in my current position where I have the opportunity to instill the value of education in the minds of at-risk youth,” Thomas said in a interview that will air on FOX 17 in Grand Rapids and FOX 47 in Lansing tonight.

The Excellence in Education Award is offered weekly to educators who demonstrate outstanding dedication, inspiration, leadership, and effectiveness in their work. The award comes with a plaque, a $1,500 cash prize, and a $500 grant to the teacher’s classroom or school district.
