Robbed passers-by for money to buy drugs

A father-son duo have been arrested for robbing an IAS aspirant of his mobile phone on Sunday night in central Delhi’s Ranjit Nagar, the police said on Monday.

The accused told the police that they were drug addicts and have been committing petty crimes for the past five years.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (central) Mandeep Randhawa said that Tinku (30) and his father Khajan Singh (50), residents of New Ranjit Nagar have been arrested on Sunday.

The victim, Vivek Kumar, was on way home after attending a function at Pusa when the accused duo attacked him.

Choked victim

“Tinku held his neck so strongly that he could not breathe. Meanwhile, Khajan punched him and robbed his mobile phone. Then they fled the spot,” said Mr. Randhawa.

Following this, Mr. Kumar shouted for help when the locals gathered.

However, Mr. Randhawa said that officers patrolling in the area reached the spot and chased the accused after which they were arrested. The mobile phone has also been recovered, he added.

During interrogation, the accused allegedly told the police that they were drug addicts and to meet their daily needs, they used to target passers-by.

“They would rob them and later sell the stolen items to get money for buying drugs,” the DCP said.
