Order to install Flue Gas Desulphurization system

GE Power has bagged a ₹309 crore contract to install Flue Gas Desulphurization system at Phase-I (2X800 mw) of NTPC’s Super Thermal Power Project in Telangana.

Announcing this, GE Power on Tuesday said NTPC has awarded the contract to GE Power India Ltd.

The FGD package will be installed in a period of 30 months for Unit-1 and 36 months for Unit-2 from the date of contract. The Wet FGD system will have a wet limestone-based open spray tower type design comprising an Absorber System, Slurry Preparation and Dewatering System., a GE release said.

“Given that coal is and will remain the energy mainstay for India in the times to come, it is imperative that the country upgrades its thermal fleet with higher efficiency, cleaner technology. Technologies such as FGD can play a significant role in controlling emissions from coal-based plants,” Managing Director of GE Power India Ltd Andrew H DeLeone said.

This is the first standalone FGD order for GE in the country since the notification of new emission norms for thermal power plants by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change in December 2015. Under the norms, it is mandatory for all thermal power plants in India to install FGD technology. An installed base of around 165 GW of thermal plant plants has been identified by CEA for implementation of FGD, over and above the power plants presently under execution, the release said.
