Delhi Police’s Crime Branch has busted a gang of highway robbers who were involved in robbing unsuspecting victims after offering them lift in their vehicles. Four desperate robbers and their woman accomplice have been arrested. With their arrest, sleuths also claimed to have solved dozens of robbery and dacoity cases.
Alok Kumar, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) said, “The arrested accused were identified as, Bittu alias Anna (34), Bittu alias Rakesh (52), Arjun Singh (23), Sandeep (28) and Sunita alias Maya (32). The gang called itself the the Anna gang and gave lift to victims and robbed them.”
While Rakesh is involved in more than 150 cases of robbery, snatching, theft, attempt to murder, he was the one who mercilessly thrashed the victim passenger and usually carried a weapon, Arjun was a drug addict. Sandeep splurged on his girlfriends and was arrested in 2009 for a murder case. Lastly, Sunita was called as the Daaku Haseena by the other gang members.
According to the police, they received a tip off that an Inter-State gang of highway robbers involved in a murder case of Sahibabad and involved in several cases including robbery, murder, attempt to murder are often seen roaming in the area of Sultan Puri and Rohini.
On the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday, a raiding party was formed and team members were directed to nab the robbers. The raiding party along with the informer reached Avantika, Rohini where Sandeep was found riding a Scooty and was subsequently caught. One robbed mobile phone and the stolen scooty was recovered from him. His
interrogation revealed that while robbing the mobile and valuables of the victim, he and his accomplice badly hurt the victim and when the victim lost consciousness, assuming him to be dead, they threw him out of the car, however he survived, said the police.
On sustained interrogation, the accused revealed that all members of his gang, also called 'ANNA GANG' are currently active in the same area after which the raiding party reached near the spot. On the instance of accused, a car was intercepted and the three robbers sitting inside the car were over powered. It was revealed that the car was robbed from an elderly couple.
Kumar said, “To commit the robberies, Anna and his gang members used to steal a four-wheeler. Their woman accomplice always used to
accompany them in the vehicle so that people, especially the daily travellers, could easily accept their offer of lift. Rakesh a habitual criminal involved in more than hundred criminal cases, would sit next to the victim on the back seat.
“After travelling a certain distance, the gang used to stopthe car at a secluded place and thrashed the passenger before robbing him of his valuables and cash. They also took away his ATM Cards and forcefully asked for the ATM PIN and after withdrawing the money, accused persons would throw man out of the vehicle. They mostly operate in and around major bus terminals and Highways,” the Joint CP added.
