A special team attached to the Avadi police on Saturday arrested three youngsters, of a six member gang, who allegedly stole a lorry from Tiruvallur and were involved in armed robbery across the suburbs using it.
According to the police, on March 3, a group of masked men hijacked a lorry near Gummidipoondi.
A complaint was lodged at the Kavarapettai police station limits. Subsequently, pictures of the lorry were circulated in the social media and a police constable’s voice message warned people that the vehicle was used by a gang to commit robbery.
On March 13, the lorry was found abandoned near SIPCOT Gummidipoondi. Avadi police special team headed by assistant commissioner B. Nandakumar comprising inspector Jayakrishnan, sub-inspector Karthik and six other police personnel was asked to crack the case.
On Saturday night around 8 p.m, the team nabbed three persons who were hiding in Kaatur. During investigation it was found that they were from Cholavaram and their names were Satish alias Pappa Satish, 19, Vigneshwaran, 21, and Vijay alias Maadu Vijay, 22.
Further interrogation found that the gang had stolen the lorry and waylaid people in Tirunindravur, Avadi, Kaatur Sidco and Manali. “They used to get into construction sites in the night and threaten the watchman at knife point. The gang stole aluminium, iron and sometimes money,” a police officer said.
A total of ₹2. 4 lakh and ₹75,000 worth aluminum bars were seized from them. “Three other members are absconding. A hunt is on,” said a police officer.
