With a footfall of 5.9 million visitors last year, the British Museum has been named as the UK’s most popular tourist attraction.
Tate Modern stood second with 5.7 million visitors and the National Gallery third with 5.2 million visitors while the Natural History Museum and the V&A were among the top five with 4.4 million and 3.7 million respective visitors in 2018.
London destination accounted for each of the country’s top 10 tourism spots as per the Association of Leading Visitor attraction . It included the Science Museum, the South bank Centre and the Somerset House.
The national Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh came 11 th with the highest ranking tourism attraction outside of the capital, this was followed by the Edinburgh Castle at number 12.
Due to the high price of travel, food and drink the overall visitor numbers to the London’s top attraction has fallen stated Bernard Donoghue of the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions.
He further said that the economic factors had an impact on the UK visitors to central London along with associated evidence that the costs linked with such visit such as travel, food and drink played an important part in deciding where to visit.
