Two contract workers of the Chennai Metrowater suffered electric shock when they were digging a road within the Ice House police station limits on Saturday. They are out of danger, said police.

According to police, Mani, 37, from Pudhur village, Sirupakkam, Cuddalore and Thangaraj, 40, from Virakunur village, Attur in Salem district, migrated to Chennai about 10 years ago and were staying in Triplicane. They worked as daily wage labourers.

They were recently hired by a private company that had taken up contract work for the Chennai Metrowater. “On Saturday 6 p.m., they were digging the Dr. Besant Road in front of a tea shop. Their crowbar hit an electricity cable and they suffered a shock,” said a policeman attached to the Ice House station.

The two were rushed to the Government Royapettah Hospital and Thangaraj was treated as an outpatient and discharged. Mani sustained 20% burns and was admitted to the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital for further treatment.

The Ice House police registered a case and are investigating.
