Future ‘God of War’ Games Will Stick With Norse Mythology

The new God of War is ready to change what fans of the franchise know about Kratos and the world of this game, but a recent interview with Sony’s reps confirms that this new release is just the beginning. Fans should expect to explore more Norse mythology in the future.

In an interview with JagatPlay, Aaron Kaufman, Sony Santa Monica’s Senior Community Strategist, talks about the Norse mythology that Kratos and his son Atreus will explore and where the story itself  is going.

“We have ideas in our head where we want to go,” Kaufman said. “Right now we know we want to stay in the Norse universe. We want to explore this relationship between a father and son, we know they have a very specific destination to get to. But we also know our fans are very savvy and smart. We wouldn’t just add atreus to God of War if it was just a one-off. This is a fundamental, big change and this being the beginning of Chapter 2, which allows Kratos to evolve, allows Atreus to come in as a new characters, as a new, vital and important character.”

The entire interview with Kaufman gives some interesting insight into the team’s thematic and technical choices made for the new God of War game, which you can listen to below. The part where Kaufman talks about how the Norse mythology is here to stay is around the 6:30 mark.

The first trilogy of God of War games explored Greek mythology with Kratos out for revenge against Ares, the Greek God of War, before setting his sights on Zeus.

God of War is set to release April 20.
