A lorry laden with ‘toor dhal’ meant for supply through ration shops in southern districts overturned on Maduravoyal Bypass Road near Irumbuliyur on Sunday morning.

Though no casualty was reported, traffic was affected for about 45 minutes on one side of the road.

The lorry loaded with over 30 tonnes of ‘toor dhal’, was reportedly driven at a high speed. The driver while negotiating a sharp curve, applied the brakes. He lost control of the vehicle which oveturned, resulting in the dhal spilling over 300 metres, the traffic police said. Highways patrol and traffic police rushed to the spot and cleared the spillage.

Officials of Civil Supplies, who arrived at the scene little later, assessed the damage to the stock and the vehicle. Sources said the lorry involved was overloaded. The driver is undergoing treatment at the Government Hospital. The Chrompet traffic investigation wing police is investigating.
