Three doctors of Emergency Medicine Department of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi died on the spot while four of their colleagues sustained critical injuries as the speeding SUV they were travelling in rammed into a canter on the Yamuna Expressway near Kaiti village in Surir police Mathura on Sunday around 2.30am.
The driver of the SUV was trying to overtake the canter when the accident occurred, SP (Rural) Aditya Kumar Shukla said, adding their speeding SUV (Toyota Innova) was stuck in the canter and dragged along for nearly 300 metre.
It took half an hour to take the victims out of the vehicle, said police.
The deceased — identified as Dr Harshad Wankhade (35), Dr Yashpreet Singh Kathwal (25) and Dr Himbala (25) — were headed to Agra to celebrate a fellow doctor Dr Harshad’s birthday. Dr Kathpal belonged to Fazilka in Punjab, Dr Himbala was from Haryana’s Yamunanagar, and Dr Wankhade (35) from Akola district in Maharashtra.
The injured — Dr Abhinava Singh from Bhagalpur in Bihar, Dr Catherin Halam from Tripura, Dr Mahesh Kumar from Madhubani in Bihar, and Dr Jitender Mourya from Hamirpur — were later rushed to AIIMS, where their condition was declared stable. They were later shifted to Jai Prakash Narayan Apex Trauma Centre, AIIMS, said sources.
Dr Wankhade was a senior resident doctor, while others were junior resident doctors (non-academic).
One of the women suffered a facial bone fracture and hip dislocation and was operated upon, while another injured doctor suffered a wrist fracture. Two other resident doctors suffered fractures in spine, ribs and hips. AIIMS director Dr Randeep Guleria has
expressed condolence on the “untimely” and “unfortunate” demise of young doctors in the road accident.
AIIMS said a team of doctors (comprising Dr Ritin Mohindra, Asst Professor, Emergency Medicine and resident doctors of AIIMS) early on Sunday left for Mathura to facilitate post-mortem on the deceased, other legal formalities and take back their bodied to Delhi.
