Parliament adjourned for 11th day amid protest

sk

For the eleventh day today, both Houses of Parliament were adjourned for the day amidst Opposition uproar. As the Lok Sabha reassembled at noon after its first adjournment, members from TRS and AIADMK trooped into the well raising slogans in support of their demands.

TRS members were demanding the increase in the reservation quota for jobs in Telangana, while AIADMK members wanted the setting up of a Cauvery Management Board.

Amid noisy scenes, Home Minister Rajanth Singh asserted that the government wants a discussion on the no-confidence motion moved by TDP and YSR Congress and appealed everyone to cooperate so that discussion can take place.

Speaker Sumitra Mahajan also made repeated appeals to the agitating members to go to their seats so that the House can take up the no-confidence motion while expressing her inability to take up the motion as the count of the members is not possible.

Members of Congress, Left, TMC, RJD, SP and others were on their feet to extend support in favour of the motion. As the protesting members were not in a mood to yield, the Speaker adjourned the House till tomorrow.

Earlier, as soon as the House met, opposition parties belonging to TDP, YSR Congress, TRS and AIADMK trooped into the well raising slogans in support of their demands. The situation was no different in the Rajya Sabha.

Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu adjourned the House for the day as opposition members trooped into the well immediately after tabling of papers. Mr Naidu objected to the display of placards in the House. Stating that the Chair is willing to allow the discussion, Mr Naidu wanted to know how long the disruptions will continue in the House.

AIR correspondent reports that this is for the third week in a row that Opposition benches continued to stall proceedings in both the Houses. As a result, no substantive business could be transacted except for the passage of the Finance Bill, 2018 and relevant appropriation bills in the Lok Sabha.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar today said, the government is ready to face no-confidence motion as it has the support both in and outside Parliament. Talking to reporters outside Parliament, Mr Kumar said, the Centre is confident that it will win the trust vote with the full majority.

He said the NDA has the two-thirds majority in the Lok Sabha. The Minister attacked the Congress over repeated disruptions saying the main opposition is responsible for the logjam in both the Houses for the last two weeks.

Reacting to Congress President Rahul Gandhi’s attack on the government, Mr Kumar said, the Congress is not realising the ground realities as it is losing election battles one after the other. Questioning Mr Gandhi for quoting the Mahabharata, he said the country is aware who are the Kauravas and the Pandavas in the Indian politics.

Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad also hit out at Mr Gandhi saying that telling lies and spreading them are the habits of Congress. He said even after defeats in recent North East elections and losing deposits in Phulpur and Gorakhpur Lok Sabha by-polls, the Congress leaders still continue to be arrogant.
