Man Utd progress, Jose unhappy

Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic scored in each half as Manchester United reached the semifinals of the FA Cup with a 2-0 victory over Brighton on Saturday.

Lukaku picked up Matic's precision pass from outside the box to nod the opener in the 37th minute. Matic doubled United's lead in the 83rd by heading in from Ashley Young's free kick.

Alexis Sanchez started on the bench for the first time since his January arrival, with Paul Pogba another among the substitutes. Neither player made an appearance in the quarterfinal as United made a swift recovery from being knocked out of the Champions League by Sevilla in midweek.

Jose Mourinho launched an astonishing verbal tirade against his Manchester United players after they reached the FA Cup semi-finals, accusing them of "a lack of personality, lack of class and lack of desire."

Just 24 hours after the United manager had made a memorable defence of his own record in the pre-match press conference, Mourinho turned his attention to his players after a comfortable 2-0 quarter-final victory over Brighton.

Only Nemanja Matic, who set up the opening goal for Romelu Lukaku before scoring a late second himself, and youngster Scott McTominay were spared massive criticism.

And after Mourinho claimed he was looking for a response to the midweek Champions League exit to Sevilla, the Portuguese veteran even claimed some of his players lacked the personality and desire to play for the famous Premier League club.

"I didn't like the game," said Mourinho. "I think we deserved to win but I didn't have the reaction from all of them.

"I had the reaction from some of them. Some of them were mentally strong enough with the football quality to play that was the reason we won.

"But a team of 11, when you have a minimum of six or seven players performing and wanting to play, who want the responsibility to have the ball, who have the desire really to play it is difficult to have a good performance

"So I am not happy with the performance at all. But I am happy with the result."

England full-back Luke Shaw was the one player named by Mourinho as having failed to follow his game plan and was, accordingly, substituted at half-time.

That made Shaw an obvious target for Mourinho to be questioned about although the United manager clearly had other players in mind when issuing his widespread critique.

"I wanted more personality in the team because many, many times I felt that Matic was an island of personality, desire and control surrounded by lack of personality, lack of class and lack of desire.

"I have to say that for example McTominay lost more passes today in all the matches he played put together but he was a Manchester United player.

"And for me a Manchester United player is one who when he plays badly still gives to the team. That is a question of personality, that is a Manchester United player for me. And that is what some of the others did not have."

Mourinho had hinted before the game that many of his stars are currently under-performing and, tellingly, Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez were both left out of his starting line-up. But the United manager's response to what was, after all, a comfortable victory was an astonishing psychological tactic that may, backfire a point that Mourinho accepted when asked why he had made such a calculated outburst.

‘Scared to play'

"My calculation is that without pressure, they don't perform well. What can I lose?" he said.

"And the ones that are always there are the ones that will always be there. And that is an example of personality.

"You have the kid that didn't play well at all (McTominay). I told him already, he was the first one I spoke to individually in the dressing room.

"And instead of being critical with him, I was positive with him because 'You played very bad but you did the basic things that one player has to do.'

"The basic things is to keep the emotional balance to play with that red shirt, which is a heavy shirt to wear. And the kid, in his worst performance by far, he was there and he had body to wear that shirt.

"He was not afraid to play. He played bad, and every player can play bad.

"But to feel not comfortable to play - 'Please Mister, take me from the pitch.' I felt that."

Mourinho, whose only hope of a trophy this season is the FA Cup, warmed to his theme.

He said that some of his big name stars are simply scared of the job in hand at Old Trafford.

"A few of the guys, I saw them scared to play. You know when the sun is shining and in football the sun is shining when everything goes well, you win matches, you score goals, everything goes in your direction, every player is a good player and every player wants to play and every player wants the ball and every player is confident to play and every player looks amazing.

"When it is dark and cold, and that in football means a period of bad results or a bad result like what happened to us a couple of days ago, not everybody has the confidence and the personality to play really."

KANE NOT MISSED

In South Wales, Tottenham coped well without star striker Harry Kane, who is likely to be out until next month because of an ankle injury.

Son Heung-min started as Kane's replacement and had a goal disallowed for offside, with the decision being confirmed by the video assistant referee.

Eriksen was allowed to advance to the edge of the area by Swansea's retreating defenders before the Denmark playmaker curled a left-foot shot into the corner in the 11th minute.

Erik Lamela scored from similar range, and in similar circumstances, in first-half injury time before Eriksen fired home a low shot from 20 meters in the 62nd.

The FA Cup represents Tottenham's last chance of silverware this season after getting eliminated from the Champions League by Juventus last week.

And the semifinal is at a neutral venue familiar to Tottenham this season: Wembley. Tottenham has taken up temporary residence this season at the national stadium while its home at White Hart Lane is being redeveloped.

In the other quarterfinal matches on Sunday, Chelsea visits Leicester and third-tier Wigan is at home to Southampton.
