Del Potro was forced to dig deep to prevail in three high quality sets of tennis - 6-4, 6-7, 7-6.
Federer had recorded his best ever start to a calendar year with 17 wins, however his Argentine counterpart proved a bridge too far.
Del Potro’s blistering forehand proved too much and after nearly two hours and 45 minutes on court, he took his first Masters title when Federer double-faulted twice.
He had to save three match points en route to his incredible victory.
You’re making history and I’m so happy to be just behind you, seeing what you do
And after celebrating his win on court, the 29-year-old signed the name Cesar on one of the TV cameras.
In fact, he was paying tribute to his dog Cesar who had recently passed away.
The victory gave Del Potro 1,000 points and a cheque for £932,000.
Speaking after the match, he said: “I’m still shaking, I think this is the worst part for me.
