The Assam government would spend Rs 20 lakh each to modernise 500 playgrounds in rural areas to promote sports talents, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said today.
"The state government has taken up various steps to develop sports infrastructure in the state," Sonowal said at the concluding ceremony of Inter Academy Master League under-11 Football tournament at Duliajan in Dibrugarh district.
The state government has also organised several international sports events in an effort to transform Guwahati into India's sports capital, he said.
"FIFA and AIBA authorities have already appreciated the state government's initiatives in this regard, Sonowal added.
The chief minister further said that the state government would set up a sports university at Chabua in Dibrugarh district and would also organise panchayat level football tournament.
The sports policy recently formulated by the state government has also made provisions for cash initiatives and jobs in the government sector for the medal winners of Olympic and other international events.
