The no-confidence motions moved by two key parties from Andhra Pradesh, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the YSR Congress Party, were not taken up in Lok Sabha during the ongoing Budget session on Monday following the adjournment of the House till Tuesday. Speaker Sumitra Mahajan adjourned the House for the day amid constant sloganeering and noisy protests by the members of the House. The motions were to be taken after Question Hour had the House been in order.

The TDP, which recently walked out of the alliance it had with the BJP-led NDA government over the Centre’s refusal to grant special status to Andhra Pradesh, has pushed for notices to two no-confidence motions against the government; the YSRCP is pitching for one. Proceedings in Rajya Sabha were also adjourned owing to protests by TDP members over special status to Andhra Pradesh and AIADMK’s protest over Cauvery issue.

While CPI(M) and Congress have pledged support to the no-confidence motion against the Modi government, BJP’s ally in Maharashtra, the Shiv Sena, would abstain from voting. The government has expressed confidence that the notices, even if they are admitted, will be defeated given its strength in Lok Sabha.
