The Republic of Ireland star, who is out of contract in the summer, last featured for the Black Cats on New Years Day but may have now played his last game for the club after Saturday's incident.

Gibson was photographed being arrested in Fulwell, Sunderland after crashing into stationary cars yesterday morning.

Northumbria Police confirmed they had arrested a 30-year-old man in connection with the crash, but did not confirm his identity.

However, Sunderland have now released a statement on the matter.

"Sunderland AFC has suspended Darron Gibson with immediate effect, after the player was charged with driving with excess alcohol on Saturday 17 March," it reads.

We expect the highest standard of behaviour from our players

Martin Bain

"The football club has commenced a full investigation into the matter.

"Sunderland AFC’s chief executive, Martin Bain said: “We expect the highest standard of behaviour from our players and should any individual fall short of those standards then robust action must be taken.”

Photographs allegedly taken at the scene showed a number of badly-damaged vehicles.

Luckily, there were no reported injuries.

Speaking after Saturday's 2-0 loss to Preston, Sunderland boss Chris Coleman was asked about Gibson's alleged arrest.

"I was told just before the game that there was an incident this morning," said the Welshman.

"I've heard one or two rumours but I don't know exactly what has happened, and until I speak to everybody here and find out, it is difficult for me to say anything."

Sunderland currently lie bottom of the Championship table.
