Hockey Player of the Year

Ethan Whetstone

University, senior

Whetstone entrenched his spot in the long line of great forwards to come through US in recent memory, growing from a strong winger as a junior to a tone-setting, scrappy center as a senior captain — a body of work this winter that earned him 2018 News-Herald hockey player of the year. Whetstone scored 20 goals and assisted on 37 others for the 24-8-3 Preppers, who advanced to their 14th frozen four. He was an all-Great Lakes Hockey League honoree, second-team All-Ohioan and one of the most respected forwards in the Buckeye State.

Mentor

The Cardinals took a step forward, going 22-10-1 with four tournament titles, a signature upset of Gilmour in a Kent District quarterfinal, regular-season victories over Shaker Heights, Rocky River, Kenston and Lake Catholic and a litany of firsts. They won 20 games for the first time since 2004-05 and advanced to a Kent District semifinal for the first time in 10 years. With a mostly young squad, next winter looks bright.
