Kathmandu, March 17

Minister for Federal Affairs and General Administration Lal Babu Pandit has highlighted the need for effective management of sewage and floodplains.

Addressing the inaugural session of the 10th Nepal National Water and Weather Week here today, he said the government would lay emphasis on more output with less investment through proper mobilisation of technical experts and stakeholders for improving public life.

Ramesh Prasad Singh, secretary at Water and Energy Commission Secretariat and NNWWW chairperson, said self-awareness was necessary to resolve water issues. He also shed light on the need for integrated water resource management, efficient water use and purification of water sources in Nepal.

Rishi Ram Sharma, director general at the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, said smart climate approach was important not only on a daily basis but also at policy level as ‘water is a boon, not a curse’.

Former Minister for Population and Environment Dipak Gyawali said that the week-long celebration would help sensitise water experts and stakeholders so they adopted integrated approach towards  water resource management.

He also highlighted the significance of improved management of water resources to reduce drying up of streams and generate hydro electricity.

Achyut Luitel, director of Practical Action, said behavioural changes regarding water-related conflicts should be addressed at grass-roots level.

Around 100 participants, including government officials, water experts from the NGOs, INGOs and students, attended the event. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the NNWWW.
