Big-time cricket back in city

more-in

Big-time cricket is all set to return to the capital city again after the successful hosting of the first ever T20 international cricket match last year at the Sports Hub at Karyavattom.

The BCCI’s tour and programme committee which met in Mumbai has allotted a one-day international match between India and West Indies to the Kerala Cricket Association. The match will be held in November this year, a year after the venue had hosted the third match of India-New Zealand T20 series. The date of the match will be announced later.

Factors in favour

The huge turnout for the India-New Zealand match and the excellent drainage facility at the stadium, which enabled the match to take place after heavy rains, had impressed the BCCI top brass. India won the rain-curtailed match and at the post-match press meet Indian captain Virat Kohli had praised the crowd who had braved the rain and waited patiently for the match to begin.

The India-New T20 match was the first international match to be played in the city after 19 years. The India-West Indies match will be third ODI to be hosted by the city after the India-Australia match in 1984 and India-West Indies encounter in 1988. The two matches were played at the University Stadium in the city.
