six-year-old standard I student at
Swami Samarth English Medium School in Pune was allegedly beaten up by a teacher for making a spelling mistake in his classwork book. The teacher banged the student’s head on the bench before beating him with a duster and stick in the classroom on Thursday, police said.
The boy sustained injuries to his head and back and had to be taken to the hospital. He was later discharged. The boy’s father, who lodged a complaint against the teacher, handed over the boy’s medical report, to the police where an offence punishable under Section 324 (voluntarily causing hurt) of the IPC was registered.
Sanjay Patil, a official of the school, told TOI, “We learned about the case only after the complaint was registered with the police. We will speak to the teacher concerned and students who were present in the classroom before taking any action.” When contacted on Sunday, the boy’s father said, “My son has been admitted again in the hospital today. I am not in a position to speak about the incident right now.” The boy’s father said in his complaint that while they were on their way home from school on Thursday, the boy told him that he was beaten by his teacher for misspelt a word in his classwork book.
The complainant said he noticed some swelling on his son’s head and took him to hospital for treatment where he also found the boy’s back was black and blue with the whipping marks caused by the stick. Police said they were investigating the matter.
