Man Utd chiefs have Anthony Martial expectations Jose Mourinho is struggling to meet

MANCHESTER UNITED chiefs reportedly expect Anthony Martial to become a superstar of the game despite Jose Mourinho struggling to get the best out of the Frenchman.

Man Utd have big expectations when it comes to Anthony Martial

Martial has experienced a topsy-turvy Manchester United career ever since his arrival from Ligue 1 giants Monaco back in the summer of 2015.

Few had heard of the forward when he touched down in Old Trafford charged with the task of providing the goals Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao had failed to deliver the previous season.

However, he blossomed under the tutelage of Louis van Gaal and, despite struggling under Mourinho last term, this season has been a vast improvement.

Yet in recent weeks Martial’s future has been called into question with Manchester United yet to offer him a contract extension.

And the Manchester Evening News say the United hierarchy expect him to become a superstar of the game.

Van Gaal thought similar when he snapped him up.

Martial struck 17 times in his debut season with his pace and potency, coupled with the fact he’s French, instantly drawing comparisons with Thierry Henry.

He struggled to make his mark last season but, on occasions this campaign, he has lived up to his billing.

A late winner against Tottenham in November was huge for him and key strikes against the likes of Burnley and Stoke are also proof of his talent.

The arrival of Alexis Sanchez, though, has hit him hard.

Martial has failed to find the net since the arrival of the Chilean and has often found himself stuck on the bench.

Even yesterday against Brighton, in a game where Mourinho finally opted to take Sanchez out of the firing line, Martial was average at best.

The MEN say United chiefs want him to become the player many expect.

But Mourinho is currently struggling to achieve that task.

There is a hope Martial will find the consistency he has lacked so far but it is down to Mourinho to make that happen.
