Former Meghalaya Chief Minister and Congress leader Mukul M. Sangma on Friday resigned from Ampati, one of the two seats that he won in the Assembly elections on February 27. He retained the Songsak seat. Ampati has been Dr. Sangma’s home turf.
He indicated that his daughter Miani D. Shira could be fielded from Ampati. “The party will take the final call,” Dr. Sangma said.
The Garo Hills part of Meghalaya is known as the political domain of Dr. Sangma’s family. His wife Dikkanchi D Shira is the Congress MLA representing Mahendraganj constituency while his brother Zenith Sangma represents the Rangsakona seat.
The National People’s Party, the Congress’s main challenger in the Garo Hills and heading a BJP-supported coalition government in the State, has not decided on any candidate for both Ampati and Williamnagar.
