Michael Mifsud proved to be Valletta’s saviour yesterday as his injury-time goal handed Valletta a narrow win over a resilient St Andrews to maintain their title hopes alive.
The Citizens remain one point behind Balzan with three games left, a maximum of nine points at stake, even though the Citizens still have to cross swords with arch rivals Floriana and European hopefuls Gżira United.
Valletta missed a flurry of chances with Matteo Piciollo hitting the woodwork twice.
At the other end, the Saints also were denied by the woodwork on a couple of occasions through Tano Azian and Kevaughn Atkinson.
However, Valletta’s never-say-attitude allowed them to snatch a late winner when following an inviting ball into the box, the ball dropped onto Mifsud’s feet to finish with composure and hand Valletta three precious points.
BOV Player of the match Matthew Calleja Cremona (St Andrews).
