Sordid tale of pain, death

Festival season is celebration time for humans. But for elephants, it is the season of torture.

Nine elephants were killed and 172 turned unruly in the last 76 days in the State. Three mahouts lost their lives in attacks by elephants while five were injured grievously during the period.

“The rules regarding parading of elephants for festivals are flouted rampantly. The elephants are denied proper food, drinking water and rest. The unruly crowd also provokes the elephants,” says V.K. Venkitachalam, animal activist, while speaking about the situation that is turning alarming with each passing day.
