A 56-year-old man was arrested on March 13 for allegedly impersonating as the Personal Secretary of Union Minister Piyush Goyal and cheating four persons on the pretext of providing them jobs in the Railways, the police said on Friday.
Nabbed at airport
Raj Kumar Verma was nabbed at the Indira Gandhi International Airport here on March 13, they added.
Mukesh Chaudhary, a helper in Vasant Kunj, had met Mr. Verma in January. The accused had promised him a job in exchange for ₹2.5 lakh. The victim paid the accused ₹2 lakh.
Mr. Chaudhary realised that he had been duped by the accused along with three others when he discovered that Mr. Verma and his family had fled their rented accommodation at Chhatarpur, the police said.
However, the accused was arrested on March 13 following a tip-off.
The police said Mr. Verma had opened a pharmacy in Gorakhpur in 2004 but was forced to shut shop in 2010 due to construction of a flyover. Having incurred multiple losses in various businesses, he sold his property in Gorakhpur and moved in with his elder son here, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) G. Ram Gopal Naik.
