CLEVELAND — Virginia Tech’s David McFadden took fifth and teammate Zack Zavatsky finished sixth on the final day of the NCAA wrestling championships Saturday.
Virginia Tech’s Jared Haught competed in the 197-pound final Saturday night, but that match was not completed at press time.
McFadden and Zavatsky had lost in the semifinals Friday night. Each lost Saturday morning in his first match of the day, so each wound up wrestling for fifth place Saturday afternoon instead of for third place. They had clinched All-America honors Friday.
McFadden (35-2), the No. 2 seed at 165, lost to No. 9 seed Chance Marsteller of Lock Haven 5-3 in his first match Saturday. But he pinned No. 5 seed Alex Marinelli of Iowa to claim fifth place. He broke the Tech record for the best winning percentage (94.6 percent) in a season.
Zavatsky (31-8), the No. 6 seed at 184, lost to No. 7 seed Taylor Venz of Nebraska 7-3 in his first match Saturday. No. 5 seed Dominic Abounader of Michigan beat Zavatsky 8-2 to claim fifth place and relegate Zavatsky to sixth.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING
UVa relay gets bronze
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Thanks in part to a third-place relay performance, Virginia finished ninth in the team standings at the NCAA championships Saturday.
UVa finished the four-day meet with 161 points. Stanford won its second straight team crown with 593 points. Virginia Tech was 33rd out of 45 teams.
The UVa quartet of Morgan Hill, Laine Reed, Kyla Valls and Caitlin Cooper took third in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3 minutes, 10.50 seconds, earning first-team All-America honors. The Stanford foursome, which included Olympic gold medalist Simone Manuel, won in 3:07.94.
UVa’s Jennifer Marrkand was ninth in the 200 butterfly in a school-record time of 1:51.81. Virginia Tech’s Klaudia Nazieblo was 14th in that event.
UVa’s Megan Moroney was 10th in the 200 backstroke.
Hill and Reed took 13th and 14th, respectively, in the 100 freestyle.
UVa’s Cece Williams was 23rd in the 1,650 freestyle.
On Friday night, Marrkand was 13th in the 200 freestyle. Tech’s Reka Gyorgy was 16th in the 400 individual medley. The Tech foursome of Nazieblo, Joelle Vereb, Maggie Gruber and Adriana Grabski was 14th in the 200 medley relay, with UVa 15th.
BASEBALL
No. 21 Virginia 7, Boston College 3
CHARLOTTESVILLE — The Cavs (12-7, 2-3 ACC) put five runs on the board in the seventh inning to break open a close game and pick up a win over the Eagles (7-9, 2-3).
Justin Novak had two hits and scored two runs, and Charlie Cody knocked in a pair of runs for UVa.
Daniel Lynch threw 7 2/3 shutout innings, giving up three hits and striking out 11 for the Cavaliers.
Virginia Tech 10, Georgia Tech 8
ATLANTA, Ga. — The Hokies (9-9, 3-2 ACC) outscored the Yellow Jackets (10-8, 1-4) 9-1 in the fourth through sixth innings and held on for the win.
JD Mundy and Darion Jacoby each had two hits, knocked in two runs and scored twice as every Hokie in the starting lineup had at least one hit.
Georgia Tech pulled within two runs in the ninth, with the tying run at the plate with one out. Nic Enright came in from the bullpen to strike out the next two Yellow Jackets and earn his second save of the season.
George Washington 8, VMI 5
ARLINGTON — The Colonels (8-11) scored the final seven runs of the game to overcome a four-run deficit and prevail over the Keydets (9-8) to even the score in their three-game series..
Nathan Eaton led the way for VMI by going 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a pair of stolen bases, stretching his SoCon-leading total to 13.
UNC Asheville 8, Radford 2
RADFORD — The Bulldogs (5-13, 2-0 Big South) put three runs on the board in the seventh and ninth innings to pick up a conference win over the Highlanders (7-11, 0-2).
Matt Roth had two hits and an RBI, and Kyle Butler had two hits and scored a run for Radford.
Ferrum 5, Greensboro 4
GREENSBORO, N.C. — Ferrum (6-14, 4-4 USA South) scored two runs each in the fourth and fifth innings, adding another in the sixth, then held on to win the second game of the series over the Pride (7-9, 4-4).
Garrett Dorton, Grey Sherfy and Brandon West had two hits and an RBI each for the Panthers.
Winning pitcher Joey Pride went seven innings, allowing four hits, two earned runs and no walks, while striking out five batters.
Marlins sweep W&L
VIRGINIA BEACH — The Generals (7-10, 0-3 ODAC) dropped a conference doubleheader to Virginia Wesleyan (10-7, 4-0) by the scores of 6-5 and 5-4.
In the opener, Deon Hammond hit a two-run double in the eighth inning, which led to the final margin.
Jason Volpicelli hit a two-run homer in the ninth to bring W&L within two runs, however, with the tying runs on base and one out back-to-back strikeouts ended the game.
Paul Diven drove in two runs for the Generals.
In the nightcap, Virginia Wesleyan scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth.
Zach Loewenberg and Jack Giardino had two RBIs each, and Giardino scored twice for the W&L.
SOFTBALL
No. 15 Florida State 8, Virginia Tech 3
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Meghan King allowed one run on four hits and struck out seven in six innings, and Jessie Warren homered and drove in three runs for the Seminoles.
Cassidy Davis, Anna Shelnutt and Elizabeth Mason each added an RBI for Florida State (20-6, 2-0 ACC).
Carrie Eberle hit a solo homer and pinch-hitter Hannah Jones added a two-run double for Virginia Tech (11-14, 1-5).
Virginia 9, Syracuse 8, 11 inn.
CHARLOTTESVILLE — Lacy Smith belted a solo homer to left-center field in the bottom of the 11th inning to give the Cavaliers the win over the Orange.
The game was tied at four after seven innings, then Alicia Hansen’s three-run triple highlighted a four-run 10th inning that put Syracuse (14-8, 3-2) up 8-4
But Kate Covington’s two-run double in the bottom of the frame spurred a four-run rally for Virginia (9-18, 1-4).
Lancers take pair from Highlanders
FARMVILLE — Karleigh Donovan’s RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning gave Longwood (14-8) a 3-2 win in the nightcap of a doubleheader with Radford (14-11).
The Lancers claimed the opener of the twin bill with a 4-1 win.
Sofia Tapia drove in Radford’s run in the opener, while Talia Douglas and Maggie Rowe each had an RBI in the nightcap.
Kasey Carr and Karleigh Donovan each homered for the Lancers in the opener.
Bishops sweep Panthers
ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — Shelby Goodwin doubled home a run and Beth Braswell scattered two runs on nine hits in a complete game as North Carolina Wesleyan (14-8, 6-2 USA South) took the first game of a doubleheader with Ferrum (12-6, 3-3) by a score of 4-2. The Bishops also claimed the nightcap 5-4.
Cheyenne Strickland (Carroll County) doubled home a run to lead the Panthers in the opener.
Kaitlyn Checkan homered twice and drove in three for Wesleyan in the nightcap, while Olivia Boyd (Auburn) and Jordan Hamlett each had an RBI for Ferrum.
MEN'S LACROSSE
No. 4 Notre Dame 9, No. 7 Virginia 7
NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The No. 4 Fighting Irish (4-1, 1-0 ACC) scored three goals in the fourth period to pick up a conference win over the Cavs.
Virginia had scored three goals in the third quarter on two goals by Dox Aitken and one by Mike D’Amario to take a one-goal lead. But two goals by Mikey Wynne and one by Brendan Gleason in the final stanza determined the final outcome.
The Cavaliers were led by Michael Kraus with four goals and Aitken with two.
Wynne had four goals for Notre Dame.
No. 12 Roanoke 21, Shenandoah 5
WINCHESTER — The No. 12 Maroons (6-1, 2-0 ODAC) used 12 first-half goals en route to a road win over the Hornets (3-5, 0-2).
Owen Curry scored six goals, Jason Sarro had three goals and four assists, and Garritt Schwartz added three goals and two assists for the Maroons.
Washington and Lee 12, Randolph-Macon 6
ASHLAND — The Generals (6-3, 2-0 ODAC) erupted for five goals in each of the final two quarters to win its sixth-straight with a win over the Yellow Jackets (3-5, 0-2).
Charlie Cory led W&L with three goals and Jones Veith and Jack Ware added two goals each.
Air Force 11, VMI 6
AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. — The Falcons (3-5, 1-0 SoCon) rode an eight-goal halftime lead to a win over the Keydets (1-5, 0-2).
Ryan Perouty led VMI with three goals and Bill Osteen had 11 saves in the net.
Southern Virginia 18, Cazenovia 6
BUENA VISTA — The Knights (6-3) outscored the Wildcats (0-3) 11-2 in the second half to come away with a nonconference win.
Seth Garff led the SVU scoring with four goals and one assists, while Shawn Lamb netted three goals and dished out eight assists. Tennison Schmidt added three goals and an assist for the Knights.
Guilford 17, Ferrum 5
GREENSBORO, N.C. — Guilford built an 8-2 halftime lead and poured it on in the second half.
Aswan Bland had four goals for the Quakers (7-2).
Tyler Fullem scored one goal and dished out two assists for the Panthers (5-7).

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — Kasey Behr and Avery Shoemaker each tallied four times for the Cavaliers.
Rachel Vander Kolk and Charlie Campbell combined for six saves for Virginia (6-2, 2-1 ACC).
Notre Dame (5-5, 1-3) was led by Maddie Howe with four goals and Savannah Buchanan with three.
No. 11 Washington & Lee 13, No. 19 Catholic 9
LEXINGTON — Midfielder Cordelia Peters recorded a career-high four goals and two assists as the Generals used a five-goal spurt in the first half to defeat the visiting Cardinals.
Dani Murray added three goals and an assist, and goalie Elliot Gilbert made seven saves for Washington and Lee (3-4).
Catholic (3-4) was led by Megan Ellis with three goals and an assist and Anna Maupin with two goals.
Pfeiffer 18, Ferrum 4
MISENHEIMER, N.C. — Molly O’Friel scored six goals and Meagan Bourque added four as the host Falcons (8-1) scored the first six goals of the game.
Kaitlyn Harvey led Ferrum (3-6) with two goals, and goalie Brittany Hall made 11 saves.
