After a lengthy battle in the courts, budget carrier IndiGo has agreed to relocate a chunk of its operations to the revamped Terminal 2 of the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) from March 25. Airport operator DIAL made the announcement on Friday.
SpiceJet had announced on Thursday that it would move 22 of its flights to T2. GoAir had moved its entire operations to the terminal last October.
IndiGo’s decision comes after the Supreme Court had last month dismissed its petition against DIAL, which had asked the low-cost carriers to partially move to T2, which has been revamped at a cost of ₹100 crore.
IndiGo will shift flights to 10 sectors: Amritsar, Bagdogra, Bengaluru, Bhubaneshwar, Chennai, Raipur, Srinagar, Udaipur, Vadodara and Vishakhapatnam, to the revamped terminal.
SpiceJet will shift flight to seven sectors: Ahmedabad, Cochin, Goa, Gorakhpur, Patna, Pune and Surat to T2.
“With partial shift of operations of the two airlines to T2, passenger area for flyers will increase from 25,917 square metres at T1 to combined 62,010 sq m. T2 adds additional 36,093 sq m in passenger area,” said DIAL.
T1 expansion plans
The shift is a temporary move to ease pressure on T1.
“The move will enable expansion work at T1, which will be expanded from the current capacity of 20 million to 40 million. It will have 22 aerobridges, and state-of-the-art infrastructure. The project will be completed within four years,” said officials.
