Coimbatore: The rural police on Friday registered a case against a 29-year-old man, who is a non-dalit for abusing a 35-year-old man by using his community name. The action was taken based on the direction from the National Commission for Scheduled Castes.
Police said 35-year-old T Chandran, of M Mandhiripalayam in Sulur taluk, was working as an insurance agent. He belongs to a Scheduled Caste (Arunthathiyar). On September 14, 2017 around 8.45 pm, he had gone to a public water tap to fetch water. While he was waiting in the queue, R Prabhu alias Prabhakaran, 29, skipped the queue and went to collect water. Irked by his behavior, Chandran questioned Prabhu for which the latter abused him by using his caste name.
On September 27, 2017, Chandran lodged a complaint against Prabhu with Negamam police. The police gave Community Service Registrar (CSR) to Chandran. They asked Chandran and Prabhu to appear for an inquiry. Prabhu appeared before the police officials twice while Chandran didn’t. However later, when he appeared, he sent a detailed complaint to the National Commission for Scheduled Castes in New Delhi, without the knowledge of the police officials.
A few days ago, Negamam police received direction from the commission to register a FIR against Prabhu. Based on the order, Negamam police registered a case against Prabhu under Sections 3 (1) (s) of the Scheduled Caste /Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act on Friday.
