The D-Nagar police are yet to arrest a businessman who threatened to pour acid on his wife.
The police on March 11 registered a case against Kannan, a resident of Puducherry and having business in Cuddalore under section 324 (b) (punishment for threatening to pour acid), 324 (punishment for causing hurt using weapon), 506(11) (for criminal intimidation) and 294 (b) (punishment for obscene utterance in public place) of Indian Penal Code.
The victim, a bank employee, had filed a complaint with the police on March 4 after the accused threatened to pour acid on her while she was on her way to attend a marriage on East Coast Road. The accused allegedly attacked her family friend who tried to intervene in the matter.
The injured person was treated at the Government Medical College and a police complaint was filed on the same evening.
Recalling the crime, the victim told The Hindu that she was asked by her husband not to attend the marriage. “Then he showed a bottle and said if I go against his wish, he will pour acid from the bottle. I walked fast and as I was about to reach the marriage hall, a family friend intervened. My husband assaulted him with a weapon,” she said.
Not the first time
According to the victim, she was assaulted by her husband on the beach in December and a complaint was lodged with the All Women Police Station.
A case was yet to be registered in the connection with the assault.
“I have moved the court for protection after the latest assault. Already, the court is hearing a domestic violence case filed in February,” she said.
Deputy Inspector-General of Police Rajiv Ranjan said the man was reported to be absconding after the case got registered. “It is a domestic issue. We are investigating the matter and the accused will be nabbed very soon. We are not showing any leniency and will go by evidence,” he said.
