Agricultural university offers nanotech solution to reduce post-harvest losses
COIMBATORE: In order to reduce the post-harvest wastage of fruits, the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) carried out research project ‘Enhanced Preservation of Fruits Using Nanotechnology’ from 2012 to 2018. The final dissemination workshop of the project was held at TNAU on Thursday.

The project, jointly funded by the Global Affairs Canada and International Development Research Center, was carried out with a financial outlay of Rs 11.4 crore.

The technologies developed by TNAU, along with University of Guelph, Canada, can reduce post-harvest losses up to 10-15%. It involves spraying fruits with enhanced freshness formulation (EFF) of hexanal, hexanal vapour, nano-sticker and nano-pellet, before harvest, or dipping them in EFF. The technology will help extend the shelf-life of fruits and vegetables. TNN
