Aam Aadmi Party’s Sangrur Bhagwant Mann resigned from his post as President of the Punjab unit on Friday.
Mr. Mann quit the party following AAP supremo and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s apology to former Punjab minister and Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia for levelling allegations of his involvement in drug trade.
Mr. Mann tweeted saying, “I m resigning as a president of AAP Punjab ...but my fight against drug mafia and all kind of corruption in Punjab will continue as an ‘Aam Aadmi’ of Punjab”.
Other leaders of AAP’s Punjab unit have already expressed their displeasure over the apology tendered by Mr. Kejriwal.
Saying that he was “stunned’’ by Mr. Kejriwal’s move, AAP’s Leader of Opposition in Punjab Assembly Sukhpal Singh Khaira had tweeted saying, “We’re appalled and stunned by the apology of Arvind Kejriwal tendered today. We don’t hesitate to admit that we haven’t been consulted on this meek surrender by a leader of his stature.”
Another senior leader and AAP MLA Kanwar Sandhu said that Mr. Kejriwal’s move is set to let down people of Punjab.
“Arvind Kejriwal’s apology to Bikram Majithia in the defamation case on drugs is a let down to the people, especially the youth of Punjab. We in Punjab have not been taken into the loop. Our fight for Punjab continues,” he had tweeted.
Meanwhile, a meeting of party MLAs is underway in Chandigarh to discuss the further course of action.
