Just when it appeared that the spread of the gastroenteritis outbreak was under control, two more deaths were reported late on Wednesday night taking the toll to 12.
Ganga Bhavani and Singamallu Nuka Raju, residents of the Potturivari Thota and the Old Club Road in Old Guntur, died at the Government General Hospital. The two were under treatment at a private hospital but were shifted back to the GGH late night. Relatives of the patients protested the decision of a doctor who had reportedly shifted them back to the GGH stating they had recovered.
The Health department said 15 persons were under treatment in the Intensive Care Units (ICU) in various hospitals.
Most of them were under ventilation for kidney-related ailments.
The Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) began taking foolproof measures to streamline the supply of drinking water in parts of Old Guntur. Municipal Commissioner C. Anuradha said more than 225 connections had been shifted to houses. Two corroded pipelines were being replaced and more than 35 manholes had been desilted. The Commissioner ordered for removal of all encroachments by hawkers in many parts of the Old Guntur.
The Commissioner also instructed the engineering department to ensure that the new UGD lines did not cut into drinking lines.
